PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reduction reaction vessel whose service life can be elongated without causing the increase of equipment cost, and which can improve the purity of sponge titanium as well, and to provide a method for producing sponge titanium. SOLUTION: Regarding the reduction reaction vessel in this invention, as a reaction vessel for reduction used for producing sponge titanium, as the material composing the reaction vessel, stainless steel in which the amount of the oxidation to be increased in the surface is≤12 g/m<SP>2</SP>in the case a continuous oxidation test for 200 hr is performed in an air atmosphere heated at 1,000°C is used. Further, regarding the method for producing sponge titanium, using the reduction reaction vessel, titanium tetrachloride is brought into reduction reaction by molten Mg. Alternatively, regarding the method for producing sponge titanium, in the process of the above reduction reaction, magnesium chloride produced in the reduction reaction vessel is extracted, thereafter, the reduction reaction vessel is newly charged with molten Mg, and reduction reaction is caused once more.
