PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a porphyrin compound which is a precursor compound having a bicyclo structure and convertible into a tetrabenzoporphyrin derivative having high planarity and good semiconductor characteristics according to an industrially advantageous method. SOLUTION: A pyrrole derivative is reacted with formaldehyde. Thereby, a compound represented by formula (1) (wherein, Q<SP>1</SP>, Q<SP>2</SP>, Q<SP>3</SP>, Q<SP>4</SP>, Q<SP>5</SP>, Q<SP>6</SP>, Q<SP>7</SP>and Q<SP>8</SP>denote each independently hydrogen atom or a monovalent organic group; and Q<SP>1</SP>and Q<SP>2</SP>, Q<SP>3</SP>and Q<SP>4</SP>, Q<SP>5</SP>and Q<SP>6</SP>, and Q<SP>7</SP>and Q<SP>8</SP>may each form a cyclic structure, with the proviso that at least one set of Q<SP>1</SP>and Q<SP>2</SP>, Q<SP>3</SP>and Q<SP>4</SP>, Q<SP>5</SP>and Q<SP>6</SP>, and Q<SP>7</SP>and Q<SP>8</SP>has the bicyclo structure) is produced.
