The airbag unit comprises an airbag (3) accommodated in a housing (2), and a gas generator (1) directly or indirectly connected to the housing. The gas generator has a cylindrical outer wall (6) with several outlet openings (7a,7b), and a bar-form element (4) extends through at least one outlet opening. The bar-form element on the side lying on the inside of the outer wall supports a deformation section (9) which during operation of the gas generator is deformed by increasing pressure and is pushed along on the inner side of the outer wall to close off the outlet opening (7b).
