A laminate material (24) for use in the casings of gas turbine engines comprises first and second layers (26, 28). The second layer (28) comprises a plurality of deformable members (32) such as springs extending transversely relative to the first layer. The deformable members are encased in a crushable support material such as a polymeric material e.g. an open or closed cell foam, a low density metal or a metal foam. The support material may comprise a plurality of hollow elements such as spheres of breakable material such as glass or plastics material embedded in polymeric material. A third layer (36) of rigid material such as steel or titanium may be arranged on the second layer opposite the first layer. Gas turbine engine casings made from the laminate material provide improved containment for blades and other components which break off from the spinning discs within the engine. |
