A telescopic stanchion is provided with a self-locking mechanism 40 which comprises a projection 55 on the end of the sheath section 15, a collet 41 axially slidable on the sheath and which carries a collar 42 oriented transversely of extension rod 32 and a lock ring 56 slidably enbracing rod 32 between the projection and the collar and adapted to be tilted by said projection into frictional engagement with rod 32 thereby to restrain axial movement thereof in one axial direction with respect to the sheath, there being provided a release face 61 oriented transversely of rod 32 supported from the collet, and resilient means 50 operatively connected with the collet for biasing the release face out of contact with the lock ring, said collet being manually movable in an axial direction against the resilient means to engage the release face with the lock ring, thereby to straighten it and permit sliding of rod 32 in the sheath. As shown, an insert 46 defines the release face 61 and a spring 50 bears against a flange 44 on this insert and also against a fixed ring 48. The collet abuts a retaining ring 53 under the pressure of the spring. In Fig. 4 the device is locked and in Fig. 6, released. A spring 52, weaker than 50, may be provided between collar 42 and the lock ring. An annular depression 60 engages the flared end 59 of rod 32 to limit the extent of opening. The device may be used on hatches and windows which open against gravity.
