A fixed permanent magnet(3) is embedded in one tool half(1) and a rotatable permanent magnet(4), preferably a sphere, is built into the other tool half(2). When the tool halves(1,2) are moved towards each other the rotatable magnet(4) rotates independently and both magnets(3,4) attract each other so that the tool halves hold together. For opening the tool halves an opposing magnetic field, stronger than the attraction between the tool halves, is applied to the sphere so that the latter rotates and the opposing poles of both magnets are now the same causing them to repel each other. When the stronger magnetic field is removed the tool halves may now be moved towards each other and the sphere once again rotates to be attracted by the fixed magnet.
