The air inlet (10) for a fume extractor, especially over cooking areas in a kitchen, has an air flow channel (15) which narrows between a guide wall (16) and a beating wall (17) from an air suction slit (18) to form a jet in the flow direction (S). The guide and beating walls can be adjusted against each other so that the dimensions of the narrowed zone (E) set the jet and the suction slit for an optimum air throughput and noise level or for shrouding. At least one wall (13,16,17) is of a shaped and bent metal sheet.
