A system for damping the vibration of a deflection-adjusting roller in a paper machine where the roller has a sleeve (2a) rotating round a fixed cross-head (6) with a shoe-piston arrangement between (2a) and (6), also has elements between the shoe and the piston by means of which vibrations transmitted from the nip are damped as they pass through these elements. A system for damping the vibration of a deflection adjusting roller (2) in a paper/cardboard machine or finishing machine in which the roller (2) comprises a sleeve (2a) which can rotate round a fixed cross-head (6) and is supported on it by supporting elements (7) pressed against the inside of the sleeve (2a) with the aid of a hydraulic pressure medium (HPM), where each element (7) comprises a radially-moveable shoe part (5) pressing against the inside of the roller and a radially-moveable piston part (10) supported on the cross-head (6), both of which can move in a direction essentially parallel to the main load (F). The system also includes elements between parts (5) and (10), by means of which vibration transmitted from the nip is transferred from the shoe (5) to the piston (10) and substantially damped as it passes through these elements.
