The method is for the identifying of errors in the operation of a parking brake of especially private motor vehicles, whereby a parking brake adjustment component is adjustable by means of a motor. By means of the number of revolutions of the motor the position of the adjustment component in the adjustment travel range (2) is determined and compared with at least one predetermined position (3-5). With an application of the brake an upper adjustment limit (3) is used as the predetermined position for the adjustment component, with the motor being tripped when this is reached. An independent claim is included for a parking brake for especially private motor vehicles with a device including a sensor to determine the position of an adjustment component in the adjustment travel range, and a device to compare this position with a predetermined position.
