For the optical control of the presence of foam at the neck of a filled bottle (7), the bottle neck (71) is positioned between a light source (2) and a camera (3). The registered brightness and bottle neck contour contrast are evaluated to indicate the foam in the neck zone. The light and camera operate in the infra red spectrum. The camera also monitors the filling level within the bottle, and the fit of the bottle cap (72) and/or the location of the bottle label are established by a further camera (4). The camera readings are evaluated by an external personal computer (PC) using image analysis.
