Devices for controlling collateral ventilation

Chemical lung volume reduction maybe utilized to control collateral ventilation so that trapped air in diseased lungs can be removed. The chemical or therapeutic agent may be locally delivered to the site or sites of highest collateral ventilation utilizing any number of methods including bronchoscopic delivery. A system for controlling collateral ventilation is described. The system comprises: a device for locally or regionally delivering a drug, agent and/or chemical for constricting channels between alveoli in a diseased area of the lung; and a device for venting air trapped in the lungs for decompressing the diseased area of the lung.
