The device has a transmitter for applying electromagnetic radiation to the road in the area around the tire contact surface and a receiver for receiving the electromagnetic radiation reflected back from the road. The electromagnetic radiation is in the form of ultrasound and/or microwaves. An independent claim is also included for a method of producing data for further determination of the current grip characteristic between a vehicle tire contact surface and a road.
