Preparation of highly concentrated flowable and pumpable aqueous, preferably of organic solvent-free solutions of betaine (I) (with a betaine content of at least 32 wt.%) by quaternation of tertiary amine nitrogen containing compounds with omega -halogen carbonic acid from conventional method comprises adding one or more micellar thickener to the reaction mixture before or during the quaternation reaction.
