<p>Prepn of methanol.. N5-. At raised temp. and pressure, starting from a conventional methanol-synthesis gas which has a considerable stoichiometric deficiency in carbon for methanol production; essentially the methanol is formed in a synthesis loop without addition of further carbon to the synthesis gas and the excess hydrogen is driven out of the loop. The methanol is formed at a pressure of 10-150 atm., pref. 40-62 atm. The methanol synthesis gas is produced by reforming the C-deficient hydrocarbon with steam. The method overcomes the necessity involved in earlier processes of obtaining suitable supplies of CO2 for addition to the synthesis gas, either from furnace gases or from a side stream of reformed gas.</p> |
