The invention relates to an improvement in a process for the production of an aromatic carboxylic nitrile by contacting a N-formylated primary aromatic monoamine having a melting point above 80‹ C. with a wide pored i.e. having more than 50% of its pores of a radius of 10 to 200 A catalyst active silicic acid gel or silicate having an internal surface area of less than 550 sq.m./g. in which the monoamine is dissolved in a fatty acid nitrile having 2 to 4 C atoms, a benzene carboxylic acid nitrile having seven to nine carbon atoms a formyl compound of a primary alkylamine having 1-3 C atoms or a formyl compound of a primary aromatic monoamine having six to eight carbon atoms (which is different from the formyl compound to be reacted) and supplying the resultant solution to the catalyst zone. The reaction is preferably conducted in the presence of an inert gas. In an example a liquid mixture of N-formyl-2,4-dimethyl aniline and benzonitrile is passed down a heated tube filled with clay rings in the lower and upper parts and with catalyst in the middle in the presence of nitrogen and 2,4-dimethyl benzonitrile is obtained. |
