A typewriter or like business machine is provided with a locking mechanism to lock the carriage and frame against relative movement during shipment or transportation, said mechanism comprising an abutment of stop 54 mounted on the escapement rack 30 of the carriage, said stop co-operating in an operative position with a notch 72 in a locking arm 70 of a locking member 64 pivotally mounted on a stud 62 attached to the frame 22. The locking arm is provided with camming surfaces 74, 76 to facilitate the locking operation and the locking arm is selectively displaced into an operative position as shown in Fig. 2, or inoperative position (Fig. 3, not shown) by manual operation of a lever 66. The locking arm 70 is retained in either position by a toggle spring 80.</p> |
