A combined clutch and torsion damper for a water jet propulsion system for boats permits the impeller to be disengaged whilst the motor remains running . The combined clutch and torsion damper has an outer ring housing (18) with a n attachment to the motor, an inner housing (22), concentric and within the outer ring housing (18), rotatably mounted on a central shaft (26), resilien t torque transmitting connector members (50) positioned between the inner housing (22) and the outer housing (18) to dampen rotational forces transmitted from the outer housing (18) to the inner housing (22), an electromagnetic clutch (76) positioned between the inner housing (22) and a clutch ring (32) mounted concentrically on the central shaft (26), and a sli p joint connection (44) on the central shaft (26) to a water jet impeller shaf t via a universal joint (48).
