A coding scale moved in accordance with the distance to be measured includes an additional track I having the same division as the least significant track 2 of the scale but staggered relative to it, storage elements associated with the track 2 to 5 of the scale being enabled e.g. by a bi-stable circuit by pulses derived from the head A1 sensing the additional track. The second track is sensed by three heads A2a, A2b, A2c the latter two being displaced from the first head by an amount k + # and 2k - # (where k is the length of one pattern of the least significant track). The outputs from the heads A2 are fed to a gate which disables the storage elements via the bi-stable circuit when the input to the gate are not identical. This prevents read out during transitions.</p> |
