Novel steroids of the formula wherein the A and B rings have one of the structures (in which R is H or CH 3 ; Z is carbonyl or #- hydroxymethylene; and X is Cl or Br) are prepared (1) by esterifying the corresponding 17#-ols not containing a 3-hydroxy substituent with adamantoic acid or the chloride or anhydride thereof and, when a 3#-ol is required, reducing the 3-ones with a metallic hydride; or (2) when the #<SP>4</SP>-7α-methyl compounds are required, reacting the corresponding 7-unsubstituted-#<SP>4,6</SP>-3-ones with a methyl Grignard reagent in the presence of a catalytic quantity of cuprous chloride in an inert solvent, with, when required, subsequent reduction to the 3#-ols as in (1) above; or (3) when the 1α- methyl compound is required, by reaction of the corresponding 1-unsubstituted-#<SP>1</SP>-compound under the Grignard conditions of (2) above; or (4) when the 2-halo-#<SP>1</SP>-compounds are required, by reaction of the corresponding 1α,2α-epoxy compound, prepared from the #<SP>1</SP>-compound by epoxidation, with HCl or HBr in a solvent.
