A process for the production of homocamphor and of homoepicamphor comprises dissolving 1,8,8 - trimethyl - bicyclo - [3,2,1] - octane - 2,4- dione in a mixture of hydrazine hydrate with an organic solvent which has a high boiling point and which is capable of supplying protons, e.g. diethylene glycol, heating and refluxing said mixture, adding a strong base after cooling and either (i) distilling off the hydrazine hydrate and water, refluxing the residue and extracting the refluxed residue with a solvent for homocamphor and homoepicamphor or, preferably, (ii) distilling off the hydrazine hydrate until the first crystals of 1,8,8-trimethylbicyclo-(3,2,1) - octane appear in the condenser, cooling the residue to room temperature, adding water and phosphoric acid until a pH lower than 2 is obtained and distilling off the water resulting in entrainment of the crystals of the desired products.</p> |
