PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pigment prepared by coating the surface of a layered alkali metal polysilicate with a metal oxide; to provide a pearl pigment at a low price whose size and shape are easily controlled; and to provide a composition comprising the pearl pigment prepared by coating the surface of a layered alkali metal polysilicate with a metal oxide. SOLUTION: The pigment comprises a layered alkali metal polysilicate as a substrate, wherein the surface thereof is coated with a metal oxide. The layered alkali metal polysilicate can include sodium salts such as makatite, ilerite, magadiite, and kenyaite. The metal oxide can include titanium oxide, iron oxide and the like.
