PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus making proper shading compensation by a method in which white reference variation region data are not used as a white reference data. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus comprises: a frame memory 32 for reading a white reference image at a white reference reading portion and storing it as a white reference data based on an output data from a line sensor; and a shading compensation processing portion 22 for using the stored white reference data as a references data during reading an image of a manuscript to detect a remarkable level variation region in a read white reference data.
