PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a PDP capable of removing a permanent after-image by preventing ion bombardment during discharge. SOLUTION: The PDP comprises a rear substrate 110, an address electrode 111 which is arranged on the rear substrate 110 and extends in one direction, a lower dielectric layer 112 covering the address electrode 111, a barrier rib 113 formed on the lower dielectric layer 112, a front substrate 120 arranged in parallel to the rear substrate 110, a pair of sustaining electrodes 121 which are arranged at the lower side of the front substrate 120 and extend so as to cross the address electrode 111, an upper dielectric layer 123 covering the pair of sustaining electrodes, a protection layer 124 covering the upper dielectric layer 123, and discharge gas in the discharge cell. A gap 130 in which the upper dielectric layer 123 is etched is formed between the pair of sustaining electrodes in the zone of the discharge cell and a phosphor layer 115 is coated on the gap 130 at the lower face of the front substrate 120.
