1,132,272. Lubricating magnetic tape. AMPEX CORP. 7 March, 1966 [26 March, 1965], No. 9791/66. Heading G5R. A magnetic transducing head 11 has a transducing gap 13 inset in a convex surface 14 around which magnetic tape 16 is to be passed under tension and to be spaced from gap 13 by a fluid film flowing in an upstream to downstream direction. A recess 18 is formed in surface 14 upstream from transducing gap 13. A fluid pressure source 22, preferably vacuum pressure, is coupled to recess 18 through a restrictor 23 and is arranged to control the flow of fluid upstream from gap 13 to control the thickness h of film at this gap. In a modification, Fig. 12, tape 16 is operated for recording and reproducing in both forward and reverse directions. Two grooves 50 and a pair of edge grooves 57, 58 are connected by channels 54, 64 to a restrictor and a pressure source. |
