PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner with a relief valve with components having improved productivity while reducing the dispersion of performance. SOLUTION: The hydraulic tensioner with the relief valve comprises a relief valve seat 12 having a plurality of radial relief holes 12b and a plurality of axial recessed grooves 12c communicated with the radial relief holes 12b, the relief valve seat 12 forming axial oil passages 12d between the inner peripheral face of a plunger 3 and each of the axial recessed grooves 12c, when pressed into the inner peripheral face the plunger 3, and a spring supporting plug 15 having an axial oil passage 15d formed between the inner peripheral face of the plunger 3 and itself, when pressed into the inner peripheral face of the plunger 3, and a radial oil groove 15e communicated with the axial oil passage 15d, the radial oil groove 15e being communicated with a discharge port 3c formed in the end of the plunger 3. The spring supporting plug 15 has a plurality of axial flat portions 15a on the outer peripheral face, and the axial oil passage 15d is formed between the axial flat portion 15a and the inner peripheral face of the plunger 3.
