<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely prevent abnormal sound emitted from a cleaning blade even when a low printing rate continues in an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes one photoreceptor drum 11 and a plurality of developing units 12 to 15 for forming toner image of respective colors by developing corresponding electrostatic latent images on the photoreceptor drum. The image forming apparatus forms a color toner image by transferring the toner images on the photoreceptor drum to an intermediate transfer drum 17 in order and transfers the color toner image to recording paper. Residual toner on the photoreceptor drum is cleaned off by a cleaning blade 16 abutting on the photoreceptor drum. When an amount of toner consumption is detected for each developing unit and a control mode is executed while image formation is not carried out, a toner image is formed, according to the amount of toner consumption of each developing unit, onto the photoreceptor drum by using at least the developing unit whose toner consumption is the largest in amount.
