PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an occupant detection device in which an occupant can early recognize failure by diagnosing presence of the failure by the occupant detection device itself and performing informing by an informing means when the failure is occurred. SOLUTION: The occupant detection device 10 has an occupant determination part 12 for comparing an output value of a load sensor 4 provided on a support part 3 for supporting a seat 1 with a previously set threshold value in order to perform discrimination of the occupant state seating on the seat 1 of the vehicle. Further, the device 10 is provided with a presumption part 13 for presuming the output value W<SB>D</SB>of one load sensor 4D of a plurality of load sensors 4A-4D from the output values W<SB>A</SB>-W<SB>C</SB>of another load sensors 4A-4C; a self-diagnosis part 14 for detecting abnormality of the output values W<SB>A</SB>-W<SB>D</SB>by comparing the presumed load value X<SB>D</SB>calculated by the presumption part 13 with the output value W<SB>D</SB>of the load sensor 4D at the position; and a failure display warning lamp 17 for performing informing when it is determined by the self-diagnosis part 14 that the output value is abnormal.
