<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmissive, partially transmissive, or transflective liquid crystal display of a lateral electric field drive type, the liquid crystal display having excellent transparency even when circular polarized light is made incident on a liquid crystal layer from a rear side. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display has a 1st substrate having a pixel electrode and a counter electrode, a 2nd substrate arranged opposite the 1st substrate, a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the 1st substrate and 2nd substrate, an upper polarizing film arranged in front of the liquid crystal layer, and a lower polarizing film arranged behind the liquid crystal layer, and has a lower optical retardation film which is arranged between the liquid crystal layer and lower polarizing film and changes linear polarized light into circular polarized one and an upper optical retardation film which is arranged between the liquid crystal layer and upper polarizing film, the liquid crystal layer being driven with an electric field produced between the pixel electrode of the 1st substrate and the counter electrode of the 1st substrate. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
