PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope to be propelled by a simple design system, which applies little pressure to a curved outer wall of the colon, which is intended to alleviate the pain at the time of colon examination caused by pressing the end of an endoscope shaft on the curved outer wall of the colon. SOLUTION: An endoscope shaft and an auxiliary means are alternately stopped in getting into a space to be examined. Also, the either one at work can be moved and guided into the space by and along the other at rest, or both can be simultaneously moved. In the latter case, the hardness of the auxiliary means is made higher than that of the shaft, which constitutes an alternate propelling system in which the endoscope shaft is moved forward in the tube-like space by the auxiliary means (preferably a fluid pad or a guide wire and/or a hose with a net).
