Aromatic hydrocarbons are recovered from mixtures containing paraffins by treatment with an extractant which contains a piperazine derivative having the formula where X is a formyl or acetyl radical and R is a lower alkyl radical. N - formyl-Nl - methylpiperazine is preferred. Other extractants, e.g. tetramethylsulphone, diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol, in amounts up to 40% b.w. of the mixture of extractants may be included, and water in amounts ranging from 5 to 25% b.w. of the extractants is preferably added. Many feedstocks may be treated, and they may contain up to 50 wt. per cent naphthenes or olefins. |
