DISTRIBUTED CUSTOMIZABLE VOICEMAIL SYSTEM

A Voice eXtensible Markup Language (VXML) based voicemail system that has a distributed architecture is disclosed. The VXML voicemail system includes a media server (120) and an application server (140). The media server (120) is in communication with a telephone network (110). The media server (120) receives a telephone call through the telephone network (110) and invokes a voicemail service of the voicemail system by sending a request to an application server (140). The application server (140) is adapted to generate a Voice eXtensible Markup Language (VXML) page in response to receiving the request and provide the media server (120) with the VXML page to the media server (120), wherein the media server (120) renders at least a portion of the VXML page. Methods for implementing VXML based voicemail systems are also disclosed. One method includes the steps: receiving a telephone call from a caller, the telephone call being received from a telephone network at a media server (120); receiving, at an application server (140), a request from the media server (120) for a service; responsive to receiving the request, generating, at the application server (140), a Voice extensible Markup Language (VXML) page; and rending at least a portion of the VXML page.
