PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus, in which the write-out timing of a light source which does not detect the write-out position of a light source is generated accurately, image shift will not occur in a deflection scanning apparatus having a plurality of light-emitting points in respective light sources, and to provide a method of controlling the image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises a deflection scanning means, having a plurality of laser diodes 101 and 102, a BD sensor 106 and an ASIC 402. In the image forming apparatus, the BD sensor 106 is provided at one of the plurality of laser diodes and generates an image write-out position timing signal; the ASIC 402 generates an image write-out position timing signal of a first laser beam of the laser diode that lacks the BD sensor 106, according to the image write-out position timing signal generated by the BD sensor 106; and the image write-out position timing signal of the second or later laser beam of the light source lacking the BD sensor 106 is generated, on the basis of a predetermined timing.
