PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas carburizing method capable of reducing the working load, reducing the cost, and preventing generation of harmful gas and abrupt change of the surface property of a work by simplifying the steps when carburizing only a part of a surface layer of the work. SOLUTION: Only an annular portion W' which is a part of a surface layer of a work W is carburized by a gas carburizing device 1. The gas carburizing device 1 has a heating coil 3 provided in a carburizing container 2 and a driving mechanism 5 to move a supporting member 4 to support the work W, and carburizing gas is fed in the container 2. The dimension of a heating area surrounded by the coil 3 is set so as to heat only the annular portion W' to the carburizing temperature. The work W is supported by the supporting member 4 outside the heating area, and the supporting member 4 is moved by the driving mechanism 5 to position the annular portion W' in the heating area. Thereafter, the annular portion W' is heated and carburized by the coil 3 within the container 2 under the carburizing atmosphere. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
