PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new maleimide copolymer having high heat resistance and high transparency and having excellent characteristics when used for optical applications. SOLUTION: The maleimide copolymer is composed of (a) at least one kind selected from structural units represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>denotes an organic group; R<SP>2</SP>denotes an alkyl group or an acyl group; and m is a number of 0-2) and general formula (2) äwherein, R<SP>3</SP>denotes a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; and X denotes a substituent represented by formula (3) (wherein, R<SP>4</SP>denotes an organic group; R<SP>5</SP>denotes an alkyl group or an acyl group; n is a number of 0-2; and p is a number of 1-5)} and (b) a structural unit having a maleimide skeleton represented by general formula (4) (wherein, R<SP>6</SP>is an alkyl group or an alicyclic group).
