PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain new production intermediates represented by formulas (IIa) and (III) for a 6-substituted-1-methyl-1-H-benzimidazole derivative represented by formula (I) being a known active ingredient of a medicine and to provide a production method suitable for mass synthesis of an N-(5-substituted-2-nitrophenyl)-N-methylamine represented by formula (II) being a production intermediate and a method for efficiently producing the 6-substituted-1-methyl-1-H-benzimidazole derivative represented by formula (I) from the production intermediate represented by formula (II). SOLUTION: The method for producing the compound represented by formula (I) (R2is a phenyl group which may contain a substituent group such as a 1-6C alkyl group or the like; X is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or a nitrogen atom) is provided.
