An improved passenger protection is achieved by refining the criterion for triggering the restraining unit provided for impact situations. A system and a method for generating a triggering signal for the restraining unit in a vehicle are provided for this purpose, the restraining unit being provided for the event of a collision of the vehicle-head-on collision, side impact.
