PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader at a low cost, which allows improvement in a resolution characteristic of an entire image forming optical system by reducing aberrations of an image forming lens and increasing the depth of focus and copes with the increase in reading speed. SOLUTION: An image reader 1 comprises a contact glass 2, an illumination unit 3, a mirror unit 4, an image forming lens 7, and a CCD 8, and the illumination unit 3 and the mirror unit 4 scan a document on the contact glass 2 in a direction of an arrow AA' to read a document image. A sagittal stopper 9 for condensing a part of reflected light in a subscanning direction (a vertical direction in Figure) is provided turnably in a direction of an arrow B so as to be selectively disposed in a first position for intercepting reflected light D and a second position retreating from an optical path of the reflected light D. When the sagittal stopper 9 is disposed in the first position, the quantity of light made incident on the CCD 8 is corrected by reduction of the quantity of light due to the sagittal stopper 9.
