PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device of an automatic transmission enabling an increase in the freedom degree of layout due to a reduction in the size of a select lever and capable of providing select lever operation force characteristics according to requests while enabling range select operation when failed by the mechanical connection of the select lever to a select position changeover device. SOLUTION: A controller 3 comprises an HPF33 determining drive start based on an operation to the select lever 11 by using start thresholds, a comparator 34, a drive permission part 35, a torque instruction value calculation part 32 calculating the drive instruction values of an assist actuator 2 when the drive start is determined, and a start threshold set part 36 setting the start thresholds from the turned on state of an ignition power.
