<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To switch a character input mode without using a button operation in a portable information terminal. <P>SOLUTION: A main control unit 270 acquires an output value of a magnetic sensor unit 400 at a predetermined time interval by timer interruption from a timer unit 274, determines that a CDMA terminal 100 move when the difference between the acquired output value and the preceding output value exceeds a threshold, and switches the input mode in conformity with a predetermined order.
