PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a toner for electrostatic image development containing a colorant and a release agent uniformly dispersed in a thermoplastic resin, having a reduced residual amount of a volatile organic compound, and capable of giving a high-definition fine printed image. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the toner for electrostatic image development, a resin composition containing a thermoplastic resin and a colorant, and a dispersion medium incompatible with the resin composition are heat-kneaded at a temperature not less than the softening points of the thermoplastic resin and the dispersion medium, and the dispersion medium is dissolved and removed from the resulting kneaded material to isolate fine particles of the resin composition, wherein a water-soluble polymer which melts at the heat kneading temperature is used as the dispersion medium, and the ratio (A/B) between a melt viscosity (A) of the thermoplastic resin and a melt viscosity (B) of the water-soluble polymer at the heat kneading temperature is regulated to 0.01-100, whereby a kneaded material, in which the resin composition is uniformly dispersed in a fine particle shape in the dispersion medium, is prepared.
