PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element array whose liquid crystal optical elements can be controlled independently of one another. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal panel 5 where the liquid crystal optical element array is constituted has a plurality of pixel electrodes 6 arrayed in a matrix. Each pixel electrode 6 is provided with a switching element 7 which turns on and off a driving voltage. This switching element 7 is controlled by a control circuit 2 through a source driver 3 and a gate driver 4. Each of the pixel electrodes 6 corresponds to one liquid crystal optical element and when a switching element 7 is turned on, a liquid crystal state changes with an electric field that the pixel electrode 6 produces, thereby obtaining, for example, lens operation or prism operation. Driving voltages of the respective pixel electrodes 6 are independently controlled by switching elements 7 provided respectively, so the respective liquid crystal optical elements can independently be controlled.
