摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain stable cleaning performance even when density control becomes unstable in an image forming apparatus where an intermediate transfer member (for example, belt) is cleaned by using a brush rotator (for example, roller). <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with the intermediate transfer belt 4 and a cleaning mechanism 30. The mechanism is equipped with a conductive brush roller 72 which abuts on the surface of the belt and a DC power source circuit 78 which applies bias voltage to the roller. The apparatus is equipped with a detection part which detects irregularities of the surface of the belt, a control part which changes the cleaning condition of the mechanism in accordance with a detection signal, a forming part which forms a patch image on a belt surface part after changing the condition so as to increase cleaning force, a control part which allows the detection part to detect the rugged state of the surface part before changing the condition and allows it to detect the irregularities of the surface part after allowing the mechanism to remove the patch image after changing the condition, a comparison part which compares the detection signals before and after changing the condition, and a correction part which corrects the image forming condition based on the result of comparison. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
