<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an IPS type liquid crystal display which has a simple structure, a remarkably improved display grade and a highly improved angle of visibility, to provide an optically anisotropic film used for the same, and to provide a new compound used therefor. <P>SOLUTION: This compound is represented by the general formula (I). The optically anisotropic film whose orientation is fixed in a smectic phase and which contains the cross-linked product of a rod-like compound represented by the general formula (I). A liquid crystal display which contains liquid crystal cells obtained by nipping the first polarizing film, the first phase difference region, the second phase difference region, and a liquid crystal layer with a pair of substrates and whose liquid crystal molecules are substantially oriented in parallel to the surfaces of a pair of the substrates, when displaying black. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
