PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shaft seal device for a submersible machine, capable of securely preventing invasion of water and foreign matters to inside of a motor. SOLUTION: A labyrinth seal 13 in which two portions of the middle of a labyrinth passage 15 are partially expanded is formed by a labyrinth ring 11 fitted into the outer periphery of a main shaft 4 and a seal cover 12 screwed on a motor cover 3. Elastic seal members 16, 17 are incorporated into the expanded width parts of the labyrinth passage 15, and grease 18 is made fill a space in a back side from the incorporated positions of seal members 16, 17. The seal members 16, 17 prevent outflow of the grease 18 from the labyrinth seal 13 caused by centrifugal force. Due to this, even when water and foreign matters are pressed into the middle of the passage 15, sealing actions of the grease 18 and seal members 16, 17 prevent further invasion of the water and foreign matters to the back side.
