The Stirling engine has at least one pair of pistons of equal diameter lying one behind the other. The two outwards facing sides of a piston pair represents the variable peripheral surfaces of a hot gas cycle. The two facing sides of the piston pair include a buffer gas. The Stirling engine is constructed as a double unit with two hot gas cycles. One buffer gas (10.1) is hydraulically connected to the other buffer gas (10.2) via a common piston rod (12).
