The disk (10) has a carrier substrate (12) comprising external surfaces (18) which are provided with magnetically or optically readable and/or writable coatings. The disk incorporates a set of permanent magnets (14, 114) on the outer circumference or sides of the substrate which enable it to act as the rotor of an electric motor, in conjunction with externally-applied magnetic fields. In the case of magnetic data storage, both sides of the carrier substrate are preferably provided with a magnetically isolating layer (16), which prevents the magnetic fields from the permanent magnets adversely affecting the storage layer. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) an electric motor with a rotor, over which a memory disc is formed; and (B) a data storage disk drive.
