The operating method has air for operation of the fuel cell stack (1) and the reformer (2) producing a hydrogenous gas introduced into a low-pressure chamber (7) enclosing components of the fuel cell device (23). The air supplied to the low-pressure chamber removes convective heat from the fuel cell components and absorbs gases from possible leaks, with the removed heat transferred to a cooling circuit (8), for subsequent heat transfer to a heating circuit (10,11).
