Vinyl acetate is prepared by a liquid flow reaction in which ethylene and oxygen or oxygen-containing gas is passed through acetic acid containing one or more mono-, di-, or tri-chloroacetic acids in the presence, as a catalyst, of at least one oxide, hydroxide, or salt of platinum, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium and iridium and at least one promoter comprising metallic copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, cobalt, and nicke, and oxides, hydroxides and salts thereof. The preferred amount of chloracetic acid present is from 100 to 1000 mole per cent based on the catalyst and promoter, and the acids may be present as acids or as chloroacetates of sodium of the catalyst metals. Examples describe the reaction of ethylene and oxygen in an acetic acid medium containing palladium acetate, copper acetate and sodium monochloracetate; dichloroacetic acid, palladium oxide and powdered iron; monochloracetic acid, palladium trichloracetate and nickel carbonate; sodium monochloracetate, and rhodium and chromium carbonates; ruthenium carbonate, trichloracetic acid and lead acetate or tin acetate; iridium and zinc hydroxide, monochloracetic acid; palladium chloride, copper and sodium acetate, tungsten oxide or molybdenum oxide and monchloracetic acid; platinum chloride, cobalt cyanide, monochloracetic acid and sodium acetate; and palladium hydroxide, silver oxide and sodium monochloracetate to yield vinyl acetate and acetaldehyde. |
