<p>The device is intended to avoid the frequent accidents caused by the premature explosion of hand grenades; each detonator is housed in its own grenade but sufficiently far from the explosive charge, so that any accidental explosion of the detonator will be isolated and will not be increased by the main explosive charge. The head of the grenade has a cylindrical boring with an extension carrying the firing pin at its base. The detonator is loaded with a spring and introduced into this boring but its passage downwards is obstructed by a spring loaded pin. The latter is kept in position, until the grenade is thrown, by the usual lever and safety pin. When the latter is withdrawn and the grenade thrown the lever flies off, the spring-loaded pin is ejected and the detonator moves downwards to strike the firing pin. Detonation of the explosive charge is then effected at the heart of the main charge.</p> |
