Compounds of formula Ar-N = N-CH(CHO)CO2H (Ar=mono- or poly-carbocyclic aryl) are prepared by reacting CH2(CHO)CO2H with diazotized ArNH2 at pH 3-9 in aqueous solution; the esters are prepared analogously.
